Anyone needing a roof replacement with solar panels already installed requires careful planning to ensure that both the roof and the solar system are properly managed. Here’s an overview to help you through the process:

Step Two: We Evaluate the Current System
- We Inspect the Panels: Check the condition of the solar panels and mounting system. Determine if any parts need repair or replacement.
- Consult the Installer: If the solar company is still in business, it is wise to contact them to see if the panels are still under warranty, and what they would charge to remove and reinstall them. Then you would be able to compare pricing, among other considerations.

Step Three: Removal of Solar Panels
If you hire us to remove and reinstall the solar panels:
- Acquire City or County Permits: We will secure the permits needed and schedule the permit inspections accordingly. If we are not hired, the solar company you hire will be responsible for securing the city/county permits. They will also need to guarantee the roof in the area that they work on since they could easily damage the roof in these areas.
- Remove the Panels: We carefully detach the panels from their mounts without damaging them.
- Store Safely: We ensure the removed panels are stored in a safe, dry place until the new roof is completed.
If hire your solar company to remove and reinstall the solar panels:
- Acquire City or County Permits: Your solar company would secure the permit required for the solar panel removal and reinstallation. This is required by the city in which you are located. A county permit is required if you are located in the county. Depending on the government agency where you are located, there are inspections required before the permit will be signed off.
- Remove the Panels: The solar company would need to completely remove the solar panels and brackets. We could then proceed to remove the existing roof. This would be coordinated between us and the solar company.
4. Roof Replacement
- Assess the Roof Structure: Before replacing the roof, we inspect the underlying structure for any damage, and make any necessary repairs.
- Install New Roofing Materials: At this time we would install the new roof.
- City or County Roof Inspection: Typically a roof inspection would be scheduled at this time for the city or county to inspect the new roof.
5. Reinstallation of Solar Panels
- Prepare the Roof: Now that the reroof or roof replacement is complete, we can reinstall the roof system.
- The Solar Mounting System: The mounting system should be installed according to the manufacturer’s specifications to ensure stability and waterproofing.
- Reinstall the Solar Panels: The solar panels are carefully attached to the mounting system, ensuring all connections are secure.
6. Final Checks and Maintenance
- Electrical Connections: Allll electrical connections are properly re-established, and the system is tested and verified that it is functioning correctly.

7. Financial Considerations
- Cost Implications: Understand that the costs for removing and reinstalling solar panels may not be included in many standard roofing estimates. At Richardson Roofing, we discuss costs upfront, concerning both the roofing and solar installation.
- Warranties and Insurance: Check whether your solar panel warranty is affected by the removal process. Inform your homeowner’s insurance about the work being done. We warranty all of the work that we do.
